FAQ
Practical answers, honestly given
The questions travellers most often ask before designing a journey with us. If yours is not here, ask it directly. A person answers.
How does planning a journey with Polaris actually work?
It starts with your enquiry: a few lines about who is travelling, when, and what draws you north. We reply personally, usually with some questions, then sketch a route for your dates. We refine it together until it fits, confirm the bookings, and remain your point of contact before and during travel. There is no obligation in the early conversation.
How far in advance should we enquire?
For summer in Iceland and for Greenland, six to twelve months ahead is wise, because remote areas have few beds and small aircraft. Northern-lights season and city journeys can often be arranged with three to six months' notice. Shorter notice is sometimes possible. Ask, and we will tell you honestly what can still be done well.
Do you publish prices?
No, because no two journeys are the same. Once we understand your dates, party and preferred comfort level, we quote a complete price for your specific journey before you commit to anything. If your budget has a ceiling, tell us early. Designing well within a budget is part of the craft.
Is Polaris Journeys a licensed travel agency?
Yes. Polaris Journeys ehf is an Icelandic company operating as a licensed travel agency under Icelandic law, supervised by the Icelandic Tourist Board (Ferðamálastofa). Company details are listed in the footer of this site.
What happens if weather disrupts our itinerary?
In the North, weather is part of the plan. We build itineraries with sensible buffers, monitor conditions while you travel, and re-arrange days when the forecast demands it, usually before it affects you. You travel with our direct contact details, and a real person answers.
When can we see the northern lights?
From roughly September to April in Iceland, Greenland and the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, given dark, clear skies and some patience. No one can guarantee the aurora, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we can do is put you in the right latitudes, in the right season, with itineraries that give the sky several chances.
And the midnight sun?
From late May to mid-July, Iceland and the high north barely see darkness; above the Arctic Circle the sun simply does not set. It changes how a day can be shaped. Late-evening hikes become normal, and the golden hour lasts until morning. We plan itineraries to use it.
Can you plan a journey across several Nordic countries?
Yes, multi-country journeys are one of our specialities. Iceland pairs naturally with Greenland or the Faroe Islands, and Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark link well by air, rail and sea. You get one considered plan and one team responsible for the whole, rather than a chain of separate bookings.
Do you arrange travel for families? For solo travellers?
Both. Family journeys are designed around the real ages and interests in your party. Solo travellers are welcome, privately or on our occasional small-group tours, including journeys designed specifically for solo women.
Who will look after my journey?
An experienced, founder-led team covers design, operations and support. The people who plan your journey are the people you correspond with, giving you continuity from the first conversation through the journey itself.
What is included in a journey?
It depends entirely on the journey we design together. Accommodation, transport, guiding, activities and restaurant reservations are typically part of the plan, and your quote will state precisely what your journey includes before you confirm anything.
How do we get in touch?
The Plan Your Journey form on this site is the surest way to reach us, and we reply personally, usually within two working days. You can also email or call using the details in the footer, and we are happy to arrange a call at a time that suits your time zone.
Something else on your mind? Ask us directly; there is no such thing as a premature question.

The best answers are specific to your journey.
Tell us your dates and hopes, and we will answer for your trip, not in general.
