Few places concentrate as much raw geography into one island: active volcanoes beside glaciers, black-sand coasts, geothermal rivers, and highlands that empty of people for most of the year. Iceland is dramatic on any itinerary. It becomes personal when someone who lives here plans it.
Polaris Journeys is based in the countryside of south Iceland, within sight of the landscapes most travellers cross the world to see. We know when the crowds arrive at the famous waterfalls. We also know where to stand when they do, and which valley two kilometres away is just as beautiful and entirely empty.
Reykjavík adds its own note. It is a small capital with serious food, design and music, and its New Nordic cooking, built on fish straight from the harbour and mountain-raised lamb, has made the city a dining destination in its own right.

The two lights
Midnight sun from late May to mid-July; northern lights from September to April. Two entirely different countries in one, both worth a journey.
The highlands
In summer, interior tracks open to rhyolite mountains, hot rivers and absolute silence. Reaching them well takes local judgment. This is our favourite Iceland.
Geology you can feel
Founded by a geologist, we read this landscape closely: walk lava younger than you are, and see where the island is literally pulling apart.

Reading the seasons
Endless daylight, open highland roads, puffins on the cliffs. The fullest version of Iceland, and the busiest at famous sites.
Autumn colour, first auroras, fewer people. A favourite window for photographers.
Ice caves, frozen waterfalls and long aurora nights. Days are short; itineraries are built around the light.

Arrive Keflavík; unwind in a geothermal lagoon, then east through farmland to the waterfalls, timed against the crowds.
