The guests who could go anywhere

Two arrivals made the Icelandic papers this summer. In June, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner brought their three children north, landing in Akureyri and settling in at a lodge in Fljót, where the Tröllaskagi mountains drop into Skagafjörður. In August, Nicole Kidman sailed around the coast with her sister and two of her daughters, then swapped the yacht for hiking boots in the mountains above the sea. “Beautiful country, trip of a lifetime,” she wrote afterwards. “We love you Iceland.”

What the two trips share is more interesting than the names. These are people who can go anywhere, and who mostly need to go where they will be left alone. They chose Iceland, for the scale of the landscape and for a culture that treats famous visitors roughly the way it treats weather: with mild interest, from a distance.

Neither itinerary would look unusual on our desk. A farm lodge in the north with mountains on three sides. Days built around riding, hiking and water. A boat, because parts of this coast are best understood from the sea. This is how we design private journeys for our own guests, and none of it is reserved for the famous. The same valleys are open to whoever arrives in the right season, with the right plan.
